Catching the breeze: The challenge of shooting under sail
When I take on a project involving a sailing yacht, I know the rules of the game instantly change. While motor yachts are all about volume, engine power, and striking design, photographing a magnificent sailboat like the Black Lion means the real protagonist is the wind.
Our mission was to capture the sheer magic of sailing, the elegance of the yacht's lines, and the ultimate sense of freedom you feel when the sails are fully hoisted. We wanted to create a visual narrative that doesn't just showcase the vessel itself, but the breathtaking experience of traveling on it. This is where high-end yacht photography truly meets storytelling.
Professional yacht videography on a vessel powered by the wind is one of the greatest challenges for any filmmaker. You can't just rely on engines; you are at the mercy of the weather. It requires immense patience and perfect synchronization with the captain and crew.
That day, we waited for the exact moment the wind perfectly filled the Black Lion's imposing sails. With the camera in hand, I navigated the deck, trying to balance myself against the intense heeling (tilt) of the yacht. I wanted to capture the tension in the rigging, the action of the crew, and the smooth, silent way the impressive hull sliced through the water.
An aerial dance around the mast
To truly convey the scale and beauty of a sailing yacht, you have to see it from above. However, executing aerial videography around a towering mast and a complex web of rigging—all while the yacht is continuously moving—demands surgical precision.
Alongside the video shots, I positioned the drone to capture breathtaking aerial photography. Freezing the yacht from the sky, with its sails fully deployed against the deep blue sea, provided imagery that is simply awe-inspiring.
