What is a Drone Made of

A significant topic we considered important to analyze is what a drone is made of. By "what a drone is made of," we mean all the parts that together complete an Unmanned Aerial System, also known by the acronym UAS.

Today, drones can be an affordable hobby for many people, serve various professional purposes such as real estate photography with drones or wedding photography with drones, and even be used as children's toys. However, a few years ago, things were very different, as unmanned aerial systems were an inaccessible means for very few.

What Materials Are Drones Made Of?

Drones are usually made from lightweight synthetic materials of high quality and durability. The goal of the main construction is to minimize the weight of the drone and increase its maneuverability. After all, the purpose of a drone is to offer the best flight experience combined with maximum safety in the event of a collision or fall.

Therefore, the materials mainly used are thermoplastics such as polyester and various aluminums. Initially, it is very important to see the parts that make up a drone to understand its operation a little bette

The Basic Parts of a Drone

A drone consists of four basic parts, each with its own particular importance in its overall function. These parts are:

  1. The main body – the frame of the drone

  2. The propellers – blades

  3. The battery

  4. The remote control system

It is easy to understand what each part is, but we will further analyze these four parts of a drone.

The Main Body of a Drone

The main body of a drone is the most crucial part of the unmanned system, as it contains all the components and technologies needed to operate. Specifically, the body of a drone houses the control board, essentially a computer that coordinates all functions, the motors, the wireless communication system for remote control, the propellers, and any additional devices such as cameras, GPS, etc.

The motors are also a significant part as they are the source of thrust in a drone.

Without them, flight would not even be possible. Typically, the motors consist of copper and magnets, while their casing is made of thermoplastics or aluminum alloy. Additionally, these materials must be such that they do not cause any problems when the motors overheat.

The Propellers

Although propellers are part of the main body of a drone, it would be a shame not to give them a little extra emphasis. A drone can have one to four propellers, which is most common in commercial drones (the reason they are called quadcopters). The propellers, and specifically the blades on them, are one of the parts that often need replacement due to wear and tear.

Even with the purchase of protective covers, it is very likely that after some time, the blades will need replacement. The propellers are usually made of reinforced carbon fibers, while the blades are made of synthetic thermoplastics to reduce the cost in case they need replacement.

The Battery

The lithium batteries used in drones are a huge innovation of our time, as they combine maximum energy supply with light construction, facilitating drone flight. The average battery life of a drone allows it to fly for about half an hour to an hour.

Remote Control System

The last part of the overall system of a drone is the remote control system, which allows the wireless control of the aircraft by its operator. The communication between the remote control system and the drone's communication system can be done over a considerable range, depending on the capabilities of each drone.

In most cases, the rule that you get what you pay for applies, as the more expensive a drone is, the more functions and components it has, while its construction quality is naturally correspondingly higher.
