How to Capture Aerial Photos and Videos with a Drone

Aerial photography and videography are not new concepts. For a long time, aerial photography has been particularly popular for various applications, such as military and urban planning purposes, as well as business advertising. However, in the era when drones were not popular and their production was limited to military operations, the only way to capture aerial photos and videos was by using a helicopter. As you can understand, the cost for something like this was quite high, as just a few shots could cost at least 3,000 – 4,000 euros.

Things changed with the development of drones and the ability for anyone to purchase them. However, even with the use of a drone, capturing a good shot or a high-definition video is not something easy that anyone can achieve. The art of drone photography has attracted many people. However, it requires a lot of practice and specific shooting techniques to achieve the desired results.

The Proper Perspective of Aerial Shots

Aerial shots differ significantly from simple photography. Although the basic rules for composing a photo or video are the same (rule of thirds, golden ratio, etc.), the entire perspective is entirely different. For aerial photos and videos to have an impressive result, there are mainly two shooting techniques.

The first, naturally and most well-known to everyone, is the vertical shot. This involves taking a photo or video that "looks" vertically at the ground from above. This method of aerial photography is an ideal choice when we seek the absence of depth, and it yields beautiful results when the shots are taken over cities, forests, or a beach.

The second method of aerial photography and videography is angled shooting. The shooting angle can range from 1 to 45 degrees, depending on your personal preferences. This is an excellent technique when we want to add depth to aerial photographs.

When we undertake event coverage with a drone, wedding photography, or other services where we want to provide a detailed view, the best way to achieve this is by combining shots using both of the aforementioned techniques.

Stable Image

A major issue that every drone photographer faces is, of course, the stability of the image in both aerial photos and videos. Naturally, choosing a more professional drone will provide much better stability than a selfie drone.

Beyond the quality of the drone and, of course, the camera it carries, image stability is achieved only through practice and gaining experience.

Use of Filters

Certainly, the way aerial photos and videos are captured with a drone plays a very important role. However, it is not the only factor to consider to achieve perfect aerial shots. Although many people disagree, the use of filters in aerial shots can dramatically help with the result.

For example, using UV filters in vertical shots helps avoid glare and protects the lens. Additionally, using a polarizer works just like in a regular camera, while an ND4 filter provides significant assistance when there is intense sunlight.
