How to Fly a Drone

How to Fly a Drone

In this guide, we will try to provide you with all the necessary information on how to fly a drone. Every operator of a quadcopter faces difficulties during their first flight. Things are not always as easy as they appear in a video. So if you are struggling with your flights, either because you haven't fully understood how your drone operates or because you are a beginner, it would be beneficial to carefully read all that we will present below. It is also a good idea to read the tips for beginner drone users as well as the article on drone flights and what you need to know.

Certainly, no one is born trained and professional. Even the most specialized drone operators, who provide high-quality services with drones, started somewhere. Knowing how to fly a drone plays a crucial role in both avoiding accidents and achieving effective aerial shots if the goal is aerial photography and videos.

Basic Drone Operation Rules

Before you start writing, you must first learn the alphabet. The same applies to flying drones, where the alphabet would be the control system. Every drone has two control sticks, one on the right and one on the left. Each stick plays its own crucial role in how you fly a drone. Depending on the type of drone, the Throttle may be on the left stick or the right stick. The first thing you need to do is find out on which side the Throttle is located on your controller. Since you might be wondering what the throttle is, we will explain the basic concepts of drone control below.

  • Throttle: The throttle is considered the most important function as it controls the drone's altitude. It is the stick that moves up and down.

  • Yaw (Rudder): The rudder controls the drone's rotation, turning it left or right (left stick and right stick respectively).

  • Roll (Aileron): The roll performs a lateral movement either to the right or to the left (right stick and left stick respectively).

  • Pitch (Elevator): The pitch or elevator gives the drone thrust to move forward or backward (stick up or down respectively).

These are the four basic functions of a drone. Before you attempt your first flight, it would be a good idea to consult your manufacturer’s user manual to determine the exact placement of these functions on your controller.

Takeoff – Flight – Landing

Once you understand the exact function and operation of your drone, it’s time for the exciting part: takeoff. Place your drone on a flat surface, preferably outdoors for starters, and turn on the camera if its activation is not controlled by the remote system. Using the Throttle, lift your drone and begin the flight. During the flight, using the control system as described above, always maintain visual contact with your drone and keep an eye on the battery level.

When you finish the flight, find another flat area, free of people and obstacles, to land the drone safely. After the landing is complete, turn off the camera and power down the drone.

As you can see, the process is quite simple and easy, but it requires frequent practice to gain the appropriate experience.

Day by day, you will gain more confidence in your flights, and eventually, everything will become automatic, much like when you drive a car.
